Livestock Production:

Forage crops and livestock production is practiced in peri-urban areas under mixed farming system. There is limited land for livestock grazing; therefore city by-laws enforce livestock keeping being limited to four cows under zero grazing. Types of livestock kept include dairy cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep and goats.

Dairy Farming

Improved breeds of dairy cattle are produced. However milk produced does not satisfy requirement. The city depends on milk brought in from other regions particularly Tanga

Indigenous cattle keeping are not prominent in the region. These supply the draught animals and others are reared for slaughtering and milk. In some periods few cattle are brought in from other regions for fattening and then slaughtered or exported to Arabian countries and Comoro. The region slaughters an average of 800-1000 cattle daily

Abattoir:

The region does not have a modern abattoir despite the large number of cattle slaughtered. There are twenty four (24) slaughter slabs and one abattoir which needs rehabilitation. Due to increasing number of tourist hotels and export opportunities, a modern abattoir is required in the region.

Hides and Skins

Due to the large number of Cattle slaughtered in the city there is an opportunity for modern hides and skin industries. Four small scale Hides drying sheds are operating.
